Press Release: Curated by three of the partaking artists, Renata Kudlacek, Lena Nix and Sara Preibsch, TDTDT proffers an international exhibition of contemporary time-based art, including moving image, sound, installation and performance, featuring eleven selected artists from around the world.
The magnificent setting of The Crypt, hidden beneath the four ‘caryatids’ of St Pancras Church – Greek columns in the form of draped classical female figures – provides a deeply atmospheric backdrop to the exhibition.
The title of the exhibition derives from the opening line of Leslie Poles Hartley’s 1953 novel The Go-Between: ‘The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.’ Notions of time are always enthralling, and each artist here addresses their own unique interest in the essence of time; from the factual to the visceral-based. Unlike the narrator in Hartley’s novel, whose life is shaped by a tragic event from his youth, TDTDT seeks to question ‘set givens’ regarding our personal histories.
